Vaginal yeast infections are caused by the Candida yeast, and usually by a subtype of Candida called Candida albicans. These bugs are present as part of the "normal flora" of the vagina in up to 20-50% of healthy women who don't have any symptoms. This is perfectly normal and not a cause of concern. However, when certain factors in the body become unbalanced, the Candida yeast can overgrow, causing a vaginal yeast infection. Yeast infections are very common, and studies show that at least 50% of women will have a yeast infection at some point in their lives. In fact, these estimates are likely too low, as many women who experience a yeast infection never tell their doctors about it. The symptoms of a yeast infection can vary by woman, and depend on the severity of the infection. Here are some of the most common Candida symptoms:

Vaginal Itching and Burning

The most notable Candida symptom is vaginal itching and burning. This can be anywhere from mild to very severe and bothersome to the woman. The burning can manifest as pain during urination, which usually feels different from the discomfort of a urinary tract infection, as the burning from a yeast infection will feel as if it is coming from outside the body, around the vulvar area, as opposed to inside the urethra.

Vaginal Discharge

Another common Candida symptom is vaginal discharge. The discharge from a vaginal yeast infection is typically described as a white "cottage cheese-like" discharge. In most cases the discharge is odorless, but in more severe cases it may have a foul yeast-like odor. Not all women with a yeast infection will have a discharge, though, so even without a discharge a yeast infection may be present.

Pain During Sex

Another frequent symptom of Candida is pain during sex. This is caused by chafing of the irritated and sore tissues inside the vagina. This can be a very concerning symptom and even cause marital or relationship problems if the yeast infections are severe or recurrent.

Other Symptoms

In some cases, more severe Candida symptoms may occur. These include:

If the Candida spreads and becomes a systemic yeast infection, symptoms in throughout the body can occur, such as:

If you think you may have the symptoms of a Candida yeast infection, it is important to see your doctor so he or she can make sure you don't have a different condition that can cause similar symptoms, such as a local allergic or hypersensitivity reaction, bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis.
